A Safety Management System Audit is a comprehensive review of your safety programs, systems, and documentation evaluate the quality and effectiveness of your company's safety programs against OSHA requirements.  As a best practice, most safety professionals recomend that safety audits be conducted at least once per year.

Although performing these safety audits can be time-consuming, the benefits are real.  Here are 5 reasons why you should implement an annual audit of your safety management system.

  1. Safety audits are an integral part of most safety management systems.  Without doing an annual audit, there is no way to verify if your program is actually working to reduce incidents.
  2. Conducting audits creates accountablity throughout your organization.  Controls created by your system may have weakened over time and regular auditing allows you to spot areas where this is occurring so you can correct them.
  3. Regular audits provide feedback that you can use to improve your safety management system over time to reduce potential losses and improve your company's safety performance.
  4. Safety audits allow you to see where additional training may be needed to help your workforce implement your safety program.
  5. Conducting regular safety audits and taking action to correct any deficiencies demonstrates your company's commitment to safety to your employees, potential customers, and government regulators.
